Like Grains of Sand (1995)

Release Date: December 16, 1995

Language: Japanese

Director: Ryosuke Hashiguchi

Main Cast: Yoshinori Okada, Ayumi Hamasaki, Kouji Yamaguchi

Summary: This somber, ambling movie views the pressures and torments of teen-age life through the eyes of Shuji, an innocent 17-year-old who is discovering his own homosexuality. The film's most poignant moments show Shuji's initiation into an oppressive social reality at the hands of his peers, including his best friend, Hiroyuki, with whom he is desperately in love. When Shuji's father discovers his son has placed a personal ad to meet older men, he sends him to a psychiatrist to be cured. In the waiting room of the hospital, Shuji meets and befriends Kasane, a fellow student who has recently been transferred into his school from another after being raped. Hiroyuki falls in love with her, and the three form a strange, intense triangle fraught with high emotional drama of a particularly adolescent sort.
